For the first two years of a young orangutan’s life, it is dependent on its mother for food and transportation. A baby #orangutan clings to its mother while she moves through the trees. This youngster was just getting some freedom from his mother, climbing on his own a few meters away. Even when young orangutans are too old to be carried and fed by their mother, they may still remain close to her, eating, and resting in the same trees, until they are about 10 years old. We learned from our guide that the orangutan will build a new nest to sleep in every night. They need a large territory and are dependent on the protection of the rainforest. The main threat to the survival of orangutan populations in the wild is the massive expansion of palm oil plantations in Borneo, decimating the rainforest. From the river, we could usually not see this invasion, but when we ventured away from the water there were palm plantations as far as they eye could see. The Sukau Rainforest Lodge has been working hard to promote ecotourism as a tool to create significant opportunities for the local and indigenous communities to generate income, job creation and education while protecting the biodiversity of the nature.
