When we said “hello” in the local creyol to this girl on her way home from school in the Chaîne de la Selle Mountains, she greeted us in return. She showed us her schoolbooks and proudly told us in French, the language in which she studies, about her school and her favorite subjects. Shy maybe, but certainly confident.'
