Green holidays are all the rage, but you don’t have to travel to Essaouira, Africa or any other location to have an eco-friendly holiday experience.

Here are some popular green destinations which you may not have considered:

  • Canada – Canada is a perfect destination for those wishing to see the wilderness and nature without impacting the environment. Arctic Canada Wilderness & Wildlife Expeditions runs tours focused on giving the most amazing views and experiences of nature while being ethical and non-disruptive to wild animals. Sea Kayaking is another option for visitors who want to see the Canadian wilderness by water while minimizing their environmental impact. If you’re planning a skiing holiday in the Great White North, see these greener skiing tips before you book your flights to Canada.
  • United Kingdom –The Green Tourism Business Scheme has certified over 1,000 destinations and experiences in England and Scotland alone. The UK is quickly becoming a popular destination for green travelers, with a growing number of green activities and accommodation options. ‘Bwlch Nant Yr Arian’ in West Wales is an old lead and silver mine which has been converted into a wildlife-friendly nature reserve and visitor’s centre. The Treehouse in Somerset, England, is nestled in the tree tops on a small farm and has all the creature comforts including Egyptian cotton linen sheets and a cedar hot tub (that runs on a natural seaweed enzyme.)  Flights to London are available on most major airlines and visitors are of course encouraged to use green travel options like taking the train to travel around the UK.
  • Australia – If you’re planning flights to Perth, consider the new luxury walking holidays with Auswalk in 2011.  Self-guided hiking trips will be offered around Western Australia’s Margaret River region and allow walkers to gain spectacular coastal views of the natural landscape and wildlife. Atherton Tablelands is a lesser-known Tropical North Queensland destination which is ideal for a green getaway.  This tropical rainforest plateau is perfect for bush walking, bird watching, horse riding, ballooning, watersports, or fishing. You can easily find cheap flights to Cairns, which is an hour’s drive from the Atherton Tablelands.
